Police Officer Struck by Power Line

A police officer, while investigating an automobile accident in which a truck struck a power pole, was hit in the head by a 22,000-volt power line. Electricity coursed through the officer’s skull and out the bottom of his feet. Miraculously, the officer lived. But he suffered from extensive burns and neurological injuries. The power company claimed that the police officer was totally responsible for his own injuries, and that he walked into a power line he should have seen.

Broussard Injury Lawyers was able to show, through extensive accident reconstruction, that the power line was initially at a safe height and was seen by the power company’s lineman who first responded to the crash – but the lineman ignored the dangerous situation and inexplicably failed to cut the power. That power line later fell on the officer. In one of the most hard-fought cases Broussard+ Williamson has ever handled, including numerous battles fought in the appellate courts, the power company settled this case on the eve of trial.

    Persistence

Not only could Randy no longer perform the work of a policeman after his horrific electrical contact injury, but he had to deal with all the problems associated with finding good doctors and coordinating his medical treatment.

Our office worked extensively with Randy’s medical providers and his workers’ compensation insurer to take much of the load off Randy and his wife in getting his medical treatment coordinated and scheduled.

Once Randy’s case was settled, he and his wife no longer had to worry about how they were going to support themselves without Randy being able to work; Randy’s recovery not only more than replaced his future wage loss, but it also gave he and his wife the necessary funds to be able to enjoy the rest of their lives together.

STEVEN BROUSSARD

Partner – Trial Lawyer

After graduating from law school in 1977, Steve entered solo practice and for eight years handled virtually every type of case imaginable – from murder cases to divorces to wrongful death civil actions. After eight years, Steve ran for and was elected Judge for the Ward 4 Sulphur City Court.

During the 18 years that Steve served as Judge, he continued to maintain heavy caseload in his private practice by working long hours. At that point in his practice, Steve began limiting his cases to those involving personal injury.

In 2002, Steve retired from the Judgeship and now practices law full-time, handling serious injury and death cases. The knowledge and experience that Steve gained through serving as a judge for 18 years is an invaluable asset to him in representing victims in serious injury and death cases. Steve understands firsthand not only the workings of a court from both the attorney’s viewpoint and the judge’s viewpoint, but he knows what it takes to impress a judge with the merits of a particular case.

“There is no such thing as an easy case when your client is seriously injured. The worse someone is hurt, the harder the other side will fight not to pay. But this case was fought especially hard. They fight because they count on most lawyers and injured people just giving up. We don’t know what it means to give up.”
